NLC Rejects Council Of State’s Approval Of N27,000 As Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the N27, 000 new national minimum wage approved by the National Council of State on Tuesday.

Peter Ozo-Eson, the union’s General Secretary, said this in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said the council has no jurisdiction to decide on another amount as new national minimum wage after a Tripartite Committee has submitted its report.

“It is abysmal of government to be delaying the submission of an Executive Bill to the National Assembly and by wrongfully adopting N27,000 through the council of states,” he said.

However, Ozo-Eson said the NLC has fixed Friday for an emergency National Executive Council meeting, to deliberate on the deadline given to the federal government to submit an executive bill to the National Assembly over the issue.

The NLC general secretary added that workers should not be held responsible for any decision the body takes in its executive meeting.

The union had threatened to shut down the economy if the government failed to pass the bill to the national assembly within the given time.

“This is because workers should not be held responsible for any development after the NEC meeting on Friday,’’ he added. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the N27, 000 new national minimum wage approved by the National Council of State on Tuesday.
